Broker added another jewel to its trunk by winning the Best Director Award at the 16th Asian Film Awards.
The Asian Film Awards is among the most prestigious international film festivals that promote and recognize the excellent cinematic works of Asian cinema, honour various film artists across the continent, promote unity among Asian filmmakers, and credit their talent.
After receiving the awards, director Koreeda Hirokazu said, “At the end of the journey, I received a wonderful gift. This is also thanks to the outstanding Korean staff and great actors. Thank you. I accept this as an encouragement to continue making films that transcend cultural and language differences. I will continue to make films in the future”.
It isn’t the first time Koreeda Hirokazu‘s movie has impressed international critics. Broker has won many accolades in the past including the Ecumenical Jury Award and Best Actor (Cannes Film Festival), Vision in Film Award (Hawai’i International Film Festival), Best International Film Award (Munich International Film Festival), Ray of Sunshine Award (Norwegian International Film Festival), and Robert Bresson Award (Venice Film Festival), among others.
The movie is also receiving positive reviews from countries across the world, including North America, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It is scheduled to release in New Zealand on March 9, Germany on March 16, and Australia on March 30 in 2023.
The movie tells the story of a ‘goodwill broker’ Sang Hyun (Song Kang Ho). Sang Hyun owns a laundry shop and is a volunteer at the nearby church. He and his friend Dong Soo (Kang Dong Won) – who works at the church – often steal abandoned babies dropped at the church in the baby box and find new parents for them.
But one day, So Young (IU) returns after dropping her baby and encounters Sang Hyun. She then decides to embark on the journey to find the potential parents for her baby.
The drama film also casts Bae Doo Na and Lee Joo Young in leading roles.
