Chico Mascate agrees to take Manuela to Laguna. Garibaldi confesses that he didn’t forget Manuela but says that it’s Anita with whom he wants to stay. Perpétua apologizes to Tereza, but she tells her to leave her house. Estevão tells Rosário that he can’t show up before the others because they’ll arrest him.
Rosário assures Bento Gonçalves that she’ll marry Estevão when the war ends, which perturbs him. Manuela tells Antônia and Maria that she’s going to Laguna after Garibaldi. Antônia tells Maria that Manuela won’t go far. Caetano courts Joana, but she only has eyes for Joaquim. Perpétua asks Inácio to forget her.
Manuela leaves the ranch. Garibaldi discovers that Laguna will be attacked by land and by sea and starts to think of a defense plan. Onofre demands that the Mother Superior of the convent tell him the truth about Joana.
Estevão shows up at the library of the ranch and tells Rosário that some Caramurus are prowling around the house. Maria asks with whom Rosário
