You can only pick one non-human drama character

mistyisles: It was harder than I thought to only pick one non-human character (versus a pair or group), but I’m going with Lee Yeon from Tale of the Nine Tailed — mostly because of his varying dynamics with the rest of the non-human cast. From the tricksy fox to the caring brother and everything in between, I’m so glad Tail of the Nine Tailed 1938 put him back on my screen. And one of the only complaints I have about it is that we didn’t get nearly enough scenes of him interacting with his past self and cringing at who he used to be.

solstices: Manhwa characters notwithstanding (I love Eun Dan-oh to bits), my choice would have to be Ok Eul-tae from Bulgasal: Immortal Souls. Not only does Lee Joon put up a heart-wrenchingly nuanced performance befitting the complex lore, but Eul-tae’s story — and his fraught relationship with Hwal — is so compelling. Much of his suffering was brought about by his own actions, yet how can you fully blame him when his torment was borne from abandonment, neglect, and loneliness? It’s for a similar reason that Rang from Tale of the Nine Tailed almost took this spot, but considering I still haven’t gotten around to watching 1938 yet (I know, it’s on the list!) I think it’s only fair for Eul-tae to be the victor. (At least he’s no longer second fiddle?)

Unit: I’m a very simple person. I see the prompt for a non-human drama character, and I instantly pick Do Min-joon the alien from You From Another Star. My pick, of course, has everything to do with the fact that the character is played by Kim Soo-hyun. Seriously, he could have spent the entire drama just breathing, and he’ll still be my favorite non-human character. Bias aside, I love a good cold-hearted-until-love-came-around hero — which describes Do Min-joon to a tee! And no, he wasn’t closed off by choice. Spending 400 years left behind on a planet that isn’t yours will do that to anyone. The year the stars finally aligned for him to return to his planet, the heroine barged in to upend his quiet existence. Cue: Do Min-joon going from being irritated with her, to grudgingly helping her out when she was in trouble, and then falling in love with her. For someone who decided not to use his superpowers to help others (because people took advantage of him in the past), Do Min-joon had no problem using those powers — to the point of recklessness — to help the woman he loves. Multiple times! That, my friends, is true love. But it wasn’t just about his powers. It was his comforting presence around the heroine at the lowest point in her life that made me love him even more. Plus on the lighter side, like many other non-human characters, Do Min-joon was super rich. He had one of the coolest apartments ever in dramaland, and his library was to die for! Do Min-joon, you will always be famous.

Dramaddictally: I’m going with a gumiho on this one because I find these mythical foxes so fascinating. And my favorite one of all is Kang Hanna’s ditsy and dating-experienced character, Yang Hye-sun, in My Roommate is a Gumiho. (Okay, I know, technically she’s a former gumiho who recently became human but she’s been alive for like 700 years, so we can look past that, right?) I tend to like Kang Hanna in general, but I’m not used to seeing her do comedy. It suits her! Here she’s the fun counterpoint to the uptight male lead gumiho — and for my money she steals the show. She might not be the smartest former-fox on the block, but she still knows how to needle her age-old frenemy and put him in his place (like, she beat him to the punch at becoming human after all). Plus, I loved her developing relationship with Kim Do-wan’s innocent and ready-to-cry character, which was really the reason I stayed live-watching this one. Sorry lead couple! I prefer my gumihos with a sense of humor and a side of adorkable.
