Mysterious motivations in script reading for Maestra

tvN’s upcoming music thriller Maestra: Strings of Truth has just released script reading stills of its main cast. Starring Lee Young-ae (Inspector Koo) in her return from her two-year hiatus, the story follows the precarious success of a talented female conductor, and the lengths to which she will go to keep her position.

Cha Se-eum (Lee Young-ae) is a world-famous violinist-turned-conductor who currently leads the Han River Philharmonic Orchestra. She’s known for being a relentless perfectionist and musical genius, but behind her reputation is a dark secret she’s managed to keep under wraps for the entirety of her career. So when mysterious events begin to occur within her orchestra, she’ll find her world dramatically shaken to its core when friends become enemies and truths are revealed.

This sentiment of two-faced secrecy also tracks when we take a look at Se-eum’s social circle. First, we have her doting husband Kim Pil, played by Kim Young-jae (Stealer: The Treasure Keeper). While he’s the entire package on the surface, internally he carries some deep-rooted animosity against his wife’s success. And within the orchestra, we have Se-eum’s protege Lee Ru-na, played by Hwang Boreumbyeol (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), a young concertmaster desperate to prove herself to her longtime role model.

There aren’t enough details to know if these two will end up being friends or foes to our protagonist, but what’s even more mysterious is the sparse character summary we get for our co-lead Lee Moo-saeng (The Glory). His character Yoo Jung-jae is described as a cunning finance chairman good at manipulating numbers and people. He’s clearly important, but what’s his connection to Se-eum? We don’t know besides the fact that he “hovers around her.” Hmm.

The plot may still be a big ball of mystery at this point, but if Beethoven’s Virus, Do You Like Brahms, or even Tomorrow Cantabile have taught me anything, it’s that there’s no world quite as cutthroat as that of classical music. Looking forward to seeing what kind of tension this drums up.

Written by Choi Yi-yoon and Hong Jung-hee and directed by Kim Jung-kwon (Love to Hate You), 12-episode drama Maestra: Strings of Truth is slated to premiere in December in the Saturday-Sunday slot.
