[Why you should watch] I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day

By: @mmmmm

When DB announced this assignment, the good student in me knew right away that I would write about I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day (also known as When the Weather is Fine). I don’t know how to explain this, but I think it suffices to say that the show struck a chord with me. And I don’t think I’m the only one either — it struck a chord with many Beanies.

If I have to provide reasons to support my claim that this show might be just what you need, there are four reasons I can think of right now that might convince you.

First, the show is beautiful. I like shows that are beautiful to watch (so, yes, cross out those gory, dark shows, or shows that contain scenes shot in dim light (*coughs* Kingdom *coughs*). This show provides a respite for me from reality which is quite darker, literally and figuratively. Who would object that Park Min-young and Seo Kang-joon aren’t good-looking? And those sweaters and overcoats? *melts* Everything is just so gorgeous to watch. The show is mostly set in one winter, so you’ll see plenty of beautiful winter wear, and winter itself. For those that don’t have proper winter (or spring or autumn — only summer), watching this show can make you feel like you are being surrounded by cold, beautiful, white-covered buildings and nature, with winter breezes. (And you don’t have to tell me that in reality it’s quite different from this, but one can always dream.)

Second, the show has one of the best found families, with great characters. Leads with traumatizing experiences? Check. Male lead with a very kind adoptive family? Check. Female lead with troublesome family matters? Check. I don’t know if this can convince you, but hey, they have one of the best supportive found families ever. The male lead has this little book club which is held at night, and the club has great members: a boy with a grandpa, a mother and a daughter, the male lead’s younger sister, a person who sells light bulbs, a best friend who works at the City Hall, etc. They are unique characters with unique lifestyles, but one thing that they have in common is that they share a love of books and poetry. Whenever they meet, their jokes, laughter, and the sharing of the stories from the books or poems they read exude warmth in the middle of the cold winter setting. Even watching from the other side of the screen, you can actually feel that warmth.

Third, the show has great pacing and a great soundtrack. If you are a researcher who is also looking for a healing drama, this one is for you. Why a researcher? It’s because I was, and still am, convinced that this show has that perfect pace — and there is something magical about it which makes it a perfect watch when you’ve had a hard or exhausting day. If you are indeed a researcher, my proposal is you undertake this most interesting work of finding out why this show has the ability to heal and relax the hearts of its watchers.

Lastly, the show has great life lessons. I found one of the most important messages to be that even with someone’s best interest at heart, your actions can be a mistake from that other person’s viewpoint. It is important to check with the other person if they are receiving your actions in the way you intend them.

Another important message is the necessity of unconditional love. When you are unconditionally loved by someone — be it a parent, a relation, a friend, or a significant other — you can then learn how to love yourself unconditionally. And when you know someone loves you despite your faults, you become able to extend such love to others. Humans are messy; so are our relationships. But when you’re able to love yourself, you can find the courage to forgive.
