Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (November 4, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Castaway Diva: Oof, that was a way more emotionally affecting beginning than I was expecting, and I found the story bounced so quickly to Mok-ha’s rescue and new life that I felt like I was the only one traumatized for a second. But, I love this writer so much, and I know she will blend all of these pieces beautifully and I can’t wait for all the healing to come. What I’m also recognizing here is the writer’s enjoyment of confused identity between two male leads. Although this dynamic operates a little differently than Start Up did (where we knew who was who), in Castaway Diva, we are left wondering who is who, and gosh, I can feel the pain of this thing already. Ki-ho, whichever bro you are, I’ve got your back. I’m on your ship. I will protect you at all costs!

The Matchmakers: Okay, this drama was exactly as quirky as I was hoping it would be, and the sense of humor – and wacky expressions of Rowoon — made this stand out. I don’t normally enjoy fusion sageuk dramas like this, but I’ll admit I had fun all the way through, and giggled quite a bit.

Twinkling Watermelon: I’m a couple of episodes behind on this one, but my (mostly positive) feelings about it are pretty much holding strong. Yi-chan and Chung-ah continue to be the cutest thing ever together. Not-Se-kyung continues to toe the line between sympathetic and annoying. Eun-gyeol continues to amaze me at how dense someone as smart as he supposedly is can be. I am encouraged that there seems to be some purpose to the time travel aside from helping the kids understand their parents better (and I’m hoping there will be some level of understanding on the parents’ parts too, once they return to their own times).

Castaway Diva: WOW what an opening! And what a fantastic performance by the child actors! I loved every second of it. This show is not at all what I expected, and I am not complaining in the slightest — both episodes moved me to tears. I cannot wait to see where we go from here. Also, if you haven’t listened to Young K’s OST “Butterfly” yet, consider this your sign to do so!

A Good Day to Be a Dog: I really love this. It’s more endearing with each new episode — which makes me cry that it’s only once a week! I’m usually not a fan of this kind of humor, but it’s so cute and fun that I’m laughing out loud. The sisters are great and I relate to Cha Eun-woo’s character (you won’t find me at a dog park). Also, I feel like his acting has improved quite a bit because I’m not distracted by it here (even if he always gets these stiff roles that hardly let him smile. Come on, the charm is the eye smiles!).

Castaway Diva: I almost didn’t make it through Episode 1. I only stuck around for Ki-ho. I don’t understand the choice to go so graphic and realistic with the child abuse when nothing else in this story is remotely realistic. I was really shocked. Episode 2 was better because Park Eun-bin is her amazing self, but I’m still on the fence and could be thrown off this one pretty easily.

The Matchmakers: I knew it wasn’t my style but I had to give it a shot. Alas, I shut it off after 20 minutes, proving there is in fact a drama I won’t watch even for Rowoon (first time for everything).
