Listening to Jung Woo-sung’s quiet world in ENA’s melodrama

With the flurry of fantasies and thrillers bringing in plenty of excitement to our current dramascape, it’s a nice change of pace to let our eyeballs slow down, taking time to pause and reflect in the latest promos for ENA’s Tell Me That You Love Me.

As a remake of the similarly titled 1995 Japanese series, Jung Woo-sung (Fly Dragon) plays our Cha Jin-woo, a hearing-impaired artist who speaks to the world through his art. But before we greet him in the new teaser, the introductory text screen has a request for the audience: “Please pay attention just for a moment.”

In the sequence, our hero explains his guarded nature: “Because I cannot hear approaching footsteps, it’s crucial for me to keep a safe distance from others.” Still, he can’t help but feel drawn to our heroine Jung Mo-eun – played by Shin Hyun-bin (Reborn) – an actress who understands how to listen with her heart.

We then watch as love blooms between our leads through a series of cute fumbles, including Mo-eun’s “confession” of her feelings which she mistakenly said through sign language instead of “conversation.” Cue the embarrassing realization.

Mo-eun honestly admits, though, that she sometimes forgets that Jin-woo can’t hear and we see how dangerous it can be for our hero when the people around him are unaware of his impairment. The teaser then closes as we catch a glimpse of the story’s main characters and the appearing captions read: “Even if you can’t hear, can’t speak, or use a different language, anyone can love.”

In supportive roles, the melodrama also stars Lee Jae-kyun (Song of the Bandits), Park Jin-ju (Critical X), Shin Jae-hwi (Moving), and Kim Ji-hyun (D.P. 2) among other talents.

Written by Kim Min-jung (Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, The Sound of Magic) with PD Kim Yoon-jin (Our Beloved Summer) at the helm, Tell Me That You Love Me will be airing in ENA’s Monday-Tuesday slot, premiering next week on November 27.
