Perfect Marriage Revenge: Episodes 9-10

It’s the penultimate week of our drama, and we’ve reached a fever pitch of birth secrets, big reveals, twists, and back-stabbings. There’s more plot than can fit comfortably — but then again, that’s half the fun.

EPISODES 9-10

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets! As we have come to learn, every evil can be traced back to Mom — no matter how far back we go — and this week, even her slimy daughter Yoo-ra is shaken by the lows her own mother is capable of.

To start things off, Yi-joo learns about the fire that nearly killed her and her mother back before she was slapped into the orphanage. Thanks to her intel, Do-gook, and our silent and sexy Secretary Kim, we learn it was all Mom’s doing. The guilty man — also her ex-lover — is fresh outta prison, and though he’s not immediately convinced by Do-gook’s offer, eventually he agrees to wear a wire tap and help them get incriminating evidence on Mom. Meanwhile, Mom is plotting a whole new level of villainy: she wants to pay Fire Guy to kill Yi-joo for keeps this time.

All this talk of ~deadly fire~ and yet our reveal of Yi-joo’s real mom as chaebol culinary instructor JAMIE (Jin Hee-kyung) hit me like a ton of bricks. What the what! You mean that’s why this woman has been hanging around needlessly in the plot all this time? (How did I not suspect this.)

Yi-joo is a lot of fun to watch put all these pieces from her past together, whether she’s horrified, furious, or just emotionally overcome. True to style, she confronts her real mom Jamie straight away, and though it’s a bit rough, the two eventually hug it out. This is dramaland after all, and two wronged heroines who had their lives destroyed must join forces. There’s just nothing like that level of poetic justice.

And so, join forces they do. Turns out Jamie is a shareholder of Hanwool… but she’s bought just enough to keep her off the radar: until now. Now, in the middle of Mom’s savage takeover, everything blows up.

Mom is standing on the platform preparing for her moment of glory when she’s shocked to see Secretary Kim swagger in with Grandpa, who’s in major huff and addresses the crowd. He’s the majority shareholder, he doesn’t have dementia, and he’s giving all his shares to his eldest granddaughter Yi-joo. *Gasp*

Yi-joo — and I love her for this — quickly wins over the entire room saying she’ll own the company, but not run it. She’s more than happy to hire an actual CEO to do that. She says all the problems in her life came from chaebol greed, and she wants to put an end to it. (And if there were any other characters in dramaland who felt this way and actually acted on it… well… we’d be straight out of plot for about 82% of all dramas.)

Having her real mother back her up at the shareholder meeting is a moment for Yi-joo, as is getting recognized publicly by her grandfather — but there’s also the big birth reveal to her father. Prior to the shareholder meeting, Yi-joo met with him, spilled all the ugly beans on her true identity, told him that Mom is trying to kill him with those all-too-familiar pills, and then gave him the results of the DNA test she ran. After adequately going through his range of emotions, he runs his own DNA test, accepts the truth, and the whole family essentially goes up in smoke. Indeed, there’s a glorious scene where everyone from Hanwool is at home, and the truth comes out. Mom is the terrible villainess, and in his rage, Dad splashes her with some tea from his cup. True punishment.

Mom flees to a motel with Fire Guy a.k.a. JO DONG-SOO (Kim Jung-tae) and his entrance into our main plot starts to have some serious ripple effects. In all of this mayhem, Yoo-ra is distraught and still clinging to the Jung-wook marriage to save her. When she winds up pregnant, she’s horrified it’s all gone awry, but Mom rejoices: this is exactly the leverage Yoo-ra needs to worm her way into Taeja! Alas, Yoo-ra is as quick as Yi-joo to know when something’s up, and she soon realizes that the “Marry me, I’m pregnant with your heir” card was previously deployed by her mom to marry into Hanwool. And yeah, Fire Guy is actually her biological father. LOL! The utter disgrace!

I never thought I’d say this, but I actually found myself feeling bad for Yoo-ra. She’s really just a product of her mother and her schemes, and when she learns this week about her mother’s true evil colors, Yoo-ra’s world shatters. Is this the end of her villain arc? Or will she continue on with Jung-wook and try to win the Taeja throne? (As for him, I’m still finding him too likable to be any real threat.)

Finally finally finally, we get to spend some time with the utter delight that is the Taeja fam. I was not prepared to wait until midway into Episode 10 to finally get into their parlor, but it’s sure fun when we do. They’re all so sharp and so disgusted by the Hanwool drama. I can’t think of a chaebol family that I have enjoyed more than this one.

But it’s also here that I’ll lodge my complaint about this week’s episodes: the romance is practically forgotten, and Do-gook has been relegated to the emotional support animal. He shows up for Yi-joo when she needs help or support. He cuts deals for her, does legwork for her, and offers copious amounts of hugs. None of these things are bad, per se, but why are they still sleeping in separate rooms? Why aren’t we seeing Yi-joo and Do-gook as true partners, banding together to stay alive and stay together? For me, the drama missed out on a really fun angle here — they could have bonded even more over their impending death dates, and the revenge journey would have been all the sweeter.

That being said, we did get some cute moments (besides the hugs), with Do-gook asking them to officially register their marriage, and hinting around that they should start a family (they should). I also really enjoyed Do-gook’s scene where he was trying to turn Fire Guy to their side, offered him double what Mom was giving him, and then had this silent moment of agony when he heard that Yi-joo was on his hit list. More of that, Show, please!

Heading into our finale episodes, we’ve left off with quite the cliffhanger. Mom and Fire Guy are driving to the nursing home which has been where all the fake Sun Jin paintings are kept. Yi-joo has figured this out (much to Secretary Kim’s utter heartbreak lol), and she’s already onsite when Mom approaches. “Run her over!” she commands Fire Guy. And he guns it! What a psycho! But the other person who’s also gunning it is Do-gook, approaching in a car from the other direction.

So yeah, this whole thing is coming full circle, and next week is sure to be full of a final dose of defeat and humiliation for Mom. And hopefully some babies for our OTP. Or you know, if we can’t have babies, I’ll just settle for a nice fleshed-out explanation of Do-gook’s side of the story. I want to know when he fell for Yi-joo, and when he concocted his own plan. I’ve been waiting for the drama to connect on this ever since Do-gook’s early hint-dropping, and I won’t be sorry if we spend most of our finale on it next week.
