A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 8
by Unit
It’s a good day to break the curse! Breaking a curse is no walk in the park, but it becomes a different case when you’re walking with a family who’s got your back.
EPISODE 8
Picking up from where we left off last week, Hae-na is lost in thought when Seo-won runs to rescue her from the “suspicious man” — who ends up being her dad. Oops! Dad came around to surprise Hae-na and ended up being surprised by Seo-won’s arm-grab instead. Heh. Handsome and protective of his daughter? Seo-won is a yes in Dad’s books, but Hae-na drags him away before he spills the beans about her secret.
Hae-na and Dad have a conversation where he tells her about when Mom first told him about the curse. Dad says he was scared and thought about running away, but that’s when he saw that despite Mom’s seeming calmness, she was equally scared. How could he run away after seeing her like that? Hae-na wonders if Seo-won will think of her like Dad thought of her mom. “Of course!” Dad insists. “He seemed like a good guy.”
For the longest time, all Hae-na had to go on was Yoo-na’s bad experience with the shitty ex, and her uncle’s sad experience with not being able to break the curse. While she already knows that Dad accepted Mom with the curse, it’s nice — and encouraging — to finally hear a positive perspective on the curse situation from Dad. To everyone else (Hae-na included), her kiss = activation of the curse. But to Dad, the kiss = his daughter’s first kiss — which he now celebrates with a rose! Go Dad! I’m so glad that father and daughter had this moment together.
Unfortunately, Hae-na barely gets to marinate in the celebration when Eun-hwan texts her to come over to a sketchy location. She wisely shows the blackmail text to Yoo-na and Woo-taek, and they follow her to the location — but hide in the shadows. Like the bastard he is, Eun-hwan appears and starts off with sniffing Hae-na and giving her dog treats. Damn! I may or may not have yelled out inappropriate words at my screen while watching this scene.
To show that he’s not bluffing, Eun-hwan sends Hae-na the video he bought from Yoo-na’s ex. He also threatens to post the video online, and tell Seo-won everything — and unleash dogs on Seo-won, his phobia be damned. Eun-hwan is really non-recyclable trash! What does he want from Hae-na? Money, of course! All the money she can gather within 24 hours. Oh and ermm… she need not bring her sidekicks with her at their next appointment. Shit! Eun-hwan saw Yoo-na and Woo-taek.
A vindictive human like Eun-hwan would never be satisfied with just money, so Hae-na’s family doesn’t even bother pooling funds. Instead, the Hae-na Protection Squad — led by Mom — takes a day off work to bring the fight to Eun-hwan’s doorstep. How dare he join forces with the ex to blackmail her daughters! Mom is out for blood, and I’m cheering her on from the sidelines. Special shoutout to Woo-taek for his active participation in all of this. That man is family — whether he ends up with Yoo-ra or not.
Seo-won is slightly alarmed when he learns that Hae-na took sick leave. He also learns that Cocoa is a virtual dog, and Yul has some explaining to do. But trust Yul to lie through his teeth, and trust his uncle to believe the lie. For now. There are more pressing matters for Seo-won to attend to like bringing porridge to the “sick” Hae-na — who is actually sick with worry.
While the sisters get into a downhearted “I’m the one who’s more sorry for putting you in this situation” competition, their parents and Woo-taek pay a “friendly” visit to the ex to get Eun-hwan’s contact information. They end up in Eun-hwan’s studio, and destroy all his equipment before packing up the evidence against their girls. I hope Eun-hwan doesn’t have insurance. He needs to pay for the damage out of his pocket.
Seo-won sees a teaser video where Eun-hwan announces his plan to unmask Hae-na, and he goes after Eun-hwan as well. The guys end up in an alley where Eun-hwan’s lackey waits with his dog, and Eun-hwan takes advantage of Seo-won’s phobia to knock him out cold. The protection squad attempt to use Eun-hwan’s ransacked studio to lure him to them, but he one-ups the squad by using an unconscious Seo-won as leverage to lure Hae-na out.
Eun-hwan puts Hae-na in front of a live video stream to capture and transmit her transformation. His impatient and perverted ass also attempts to kiss her to see if she’ll transform quicker. Thankfully, his attempt at sexual assault is stopped by a kick from Seo-won! Oh yeah, Lackey gave up on Eun-hwan and helped Seo-won to escape! As Seo-won punches the daylights out of Eun-hwan, Hae-na flees. And when Seo-won goes after her, she tells him not to come closer. It’s almost midnight, and she can’t bring herself to tell him that she turns into a dog.
Seo-won approaches Hae-na anyway. He tells her that he wants to bond with “Cocoa” — and that’s when the clock strikes midnight, and Cocoa appears. Seo-won gingerly picks her up, and reminisces on all the times he spent with Hae-na. “If it’s really you, I don’t need to be afraid,” he thinks. Prince Charming kisses Cinderella, and the curse is broken!! *wipes a tear and does a celebratory dance* It’s not that Seo-won has been magically cured of his phobia, it’s that Seo-won, despite his phobia, risked it all to break Hae-na’s curse. This right here is true love on display.
But how is Hae-na fully dressed immediately after turning back to human form, when she earlier shed her clothes as a dog? (This is totally me nitpicking right now lol.) Afterwards, Hae-na apologizes for hovering around Seo-won as Cocoa in order to break the curse, and I love that she did this. Seo-won finally confesses to Hae-na, and she asks for them to kiss one more time. Remember, she won’t turn into a dog anymore if it’s with someone she has already lifted her curse with. So they kiss. And kiss some more. And I’m really happy for you guys, but can you stop reminding me about how single I am?
So we don’t forget that he’s also an important character in this show, Bo-gyeom makes an appearance to put an end to the Eun-hwan arc by wiping his memories. On this note, we travel back to the Joseon times where Bo-gyeom cursed Hae-na’s family’s ancestor as follows: “When your descendants find love and are kissed, they will take a form that is no longer human. They must prove the sincerity of their oh-so-precious affection to turn back into a human again.” Uh… okay?
Before the curse, we see that Bo-gyeom developed a friendship with a girl named CHO-YOUNG (Joseon Ji-ah). But as to how this friendship turned out and why Hae-na’s family was cursed, I guess we’ll find out soon enough. But you know what? I don’t really care that much about it now that Hae-na has lifted her curse, and we’re finally entering the Seo-won × Hae-na dating era. I just know those two will smother me with their cuteness!
