On March 14th, a completion event for the Amazon Original drama series “Angel Flight” was held in Tokyo, which will be exclusively streamed on Prime Video in 168 countries worldwide. The event was attended by the lead actress Ryoko Yonekura, as well as co-stars Honoka Matsumoto, Yu Shirota, Kayo Nura, Yu Tokui, and Kenichi Endo.
The series is based on a non-fiction work by Ryoko Sasaki, which depicts the life of a specialist called an “international funeral director” who delivers the bodies of deceased people across borders to their families. Yonekura plays the role of Nami Izawa, the director of “Angel Hearth” located at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Yonekura, who was a fan of the original work even before receiving the offer to star in the series, recalled being moved by the story and was eager to participate in bringing that same emotion to the viewers. Despite concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and her own health condition, she immersed herself in the role with guidance from the model for the character, Rie Kimura. She stated that she wanted people to know about the profession of “international funeral directors” and felt a strong sense of mission in portraying the character.
The series revolves around deaths that occur overseas, and Yonekura said that she was moved by the stories of saying goodbye to each person in a unique way. However, she expressed confidence in the drama, saying that it depicts the energy of the lives that continue beyond death, and she hopes that people all over the world will watch it.
Endo, who plays Nami’s boss and the chairman of the company, Shiro Kashiwagi, praised Yonekura for her passionate approach to acting and how she embodied a powerful character. Yonekura and Endo previously worked together on “Doctor X.”
“Angel Flight” will be available on Prime Video from March 17th, with all six episodes available for streaming. The series is written by Ryota Kosawa, known for “The Legend & Butterfly” currently showing in theaters.
