Once referring to themselves as “the Shuebachs,” Amy Robach and Andrew Shue blended their two families when they wed in 2010.
“We’ve been described as the Brady Bunch,” Robach exclusively told Us Weekly in 2017 before joking: “We don’t have an Alice. That’s my biggest complaint.”
Shue quipped at the time: “She does everything! The other night it was 10 o’clock and she was folding laundry.”
The Melrose Place alum, for his part, is the father of three boys — Nathaniel, born in 1996, Aidan, born in 1999, and Wyatt, born in 2004 — whom he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Hageney. The Good Morning America anchor, meanwhile, is a girl mom, sharing daughters Ava, born in 2002, and Analise, born in 2006, with ex-husband Tim McIntosh.
“We’re very aware that we’re like the cool aunt or uncle. We never want to take the place of their parents,” Shue told Us about taking on the role of a stepparent.
Robach added at the time: “We’re mentors who guide them and love them. My daughters have a stepmother with their father, and I look at it like, there are more people who love my kids.”
The twosome went on to get candid about the differences of raising boys and girls.
“Boys smell. I’ve been the hygiene police, staying on top of showers and things like that. But there’s a sweetness that I get from the boys that I don’t get from my daughters, funny enough,” she said. “It’s really nice to see them turn into gentlemen. Wyatt will open the door and ask, ‘Amy, can I take that from you?’ My daughters are throwing their backpacks on me.”
The actor referred to Robach’s daughters as “strong-willed women,” explaining: “I was like, ‘Oh, they’re never going to fight,’ but their feisty and I like that. They’re always challenging me. I remember the first time I met Ava, she challenged me to a race. It’s not quintessential like, ‘We’re going to go do girl things.’ It’s been nice to have both sides.”
The pair went through ups and downs throughout their marriage, with the journalist telling People in 2015 that they were struggling within 10 months of their union.
“We were learning how to live with each other,” she said. “We would have blowout fights. Just so much passion between us. It was like clockwork —we called them the Friday-night fights. Everything that was making you crazy all week came out.”
In November 2013, Robach revealed on GMA that she was battling breast cancer. Years later, the twosome teamed up to write a children’s book titled Better Together!, a title that was inspired by her health scare.
“I named my book Better and it came from a poem my daughter wrote for me as I was going through chemo at the time and really at a low point,” Robach explained on The Middle in October 2021. “She wrote me a poem about how it has to get worse before it can get better and trust me it will get better. So that poem is at the beginning of my book and that’s why I chose the title Better.”
Two months later, the former soccer player called their blended family their “greatest achievement.”
“Anybody who’s blended a family knows that when you’re bringing together different parenting styles it is very hard,” he said on The View in December 2021. “I give Amy all the credit for really sticking with it, because there were a lot of times where I was kind of the problem in figuring out how to create a playbook together. I resisted. It’s tough to have two playbooks. You have to have one playbook. And when you’re married for the first time, it’s obvious you have one playbook. And Amy has brought so much to my boys, discipline and love. It’s really been a journey.”
Things have since taken a turn for the family. In November 2022, several sets of photos of Robach cozying up to her co-anchor T.J. Holmes surfaced. An insider told Us at the time that the coworkers’ reported romance “blossomed from a close friendship,” which began when they started working on GMA3 in 2020.
“They always had a spark and their work trips away together brought them even closer,” the source said. “They have been trying to keep their relationship a secret until they were ready to announce.”
While Robach temporally deleted her social media profile amid the scandal, Shue opted to wipe all the footage of his spouse from his account. When news broke in January 2023 that Robach and Holmes were officially out at ABC, Shue’s son Nate seemingly reacted via a Jimmy Fallon GIF. “Let’s just move on!” the clip’s caption read.
Holmes, for his part, has stayed offline as the controversy played out. The CNN alum filed for divorce from Marilee Fiebig, whom he married in 2010, on December 28, 2022. Fiebig spoke out for the first time in January 2023 as Holmes and Robach continued to pack on the PDA on various outings.
“We continue to be disappointed by T.J’s lack of discretion, respect and sensitivity toward Marilee and the party’s daughter,” Fiebig’s lawyer said in a statement, referring to the exes’ daughter, Sabine. “Marilee has been touched by the outpouring of support and looks forward to a new beginning in this new year.”
