Castaway Diva: Episodes 9-10

Our diva learns the price of success and stardom when she’s asked how far she’ll go to achieve her dreams. It’s time for her and her found family to make some hard choices as they all consider their futures and how best to protect what’s most important to them.

EPISODES 9-10

We pick back up where we left off last week with Bo-geol confronting his father at his apartment. Bong-wan seems happy to see Ki-ho at first but that quickly turns to rage when he discovers Bo-geol is recording their conversation. He immediately begins beating Bo-geol, screaming at him for his “betrayal.” Little does Bong-wan know, this unhinged and violent behavior is exactly what Bo-geol wanted. He whips out his second hidden recording device and threatens to turn his father in with this new evidence if he doesn’t leave them alone – they’re happy now, so he should forget them and move on.

Ever the stoic sufferer, Bo-geol douses himself in alcohol to lend credence to his I-fell-down-drunk explanation for his myriad of cuts and bruises. Woo-hak doesn’t buy that for a second and demands to know who hit him, so Bo-geol tells Woo-hak and Mok-ha everything. When he admits to Mok-ha he’s afraid of what he’ll do if he ever sees Bong-wan again, Mok-ha vows that will never happen.

Sang-doo overhears this conversation and approaches Mok-ha later, hoping for some clue as to what to do for the boys. After Mok-ha shares how the years of lying have impacted Bo-geol, Sang-doo makes his decision. Taking a page out of his son’s book, he secretly goes to the police and turns himself in for identity theft.

Meanwhile, Mok-ha is stunned by Ran-joo’s abandonment and is left to weigh the many offers she has on her own. Hoping to prove to Ran-joo how serious she is about her career, Mok-ha chooses R&J. Now that she’s signed, Seo-joon tells her to pick a song from their unused catalog for an upcoming showcase. Mok-ha dives in enthusiastically and falls in love with one of the songs, but the composer refuses to let her sing it.

She’s shocked to realize the song belongs to artist manager PARK YONG-GWAN whose naivety and can-do attitude grates on his nerves. He’s been in her shoes – he used to be Ran-joo’s talented protégé, but after years of struggling, he gave up. Watching Mok-ha’s “easy” success angers him, but not even he can hate Mok-ha for long. Her determination wins out, and he allows her to rework his song for the showcase performance. As always, the performance is a smashing success, and Mo-rae is bitter about it.

Unbeknownst to Mok-ha, Ran-joo did the arrangement for the song after Bo-geol requested it of her. Looks like she hasn’t given up on our girl after all. In fact, Ran-joo is in the process of rewriting her contract with Seo-joon. She’ll give up her right to the shares in exchange for being the producer for Mok-ha’s debut album.

At home, Woo-hak slinks into the shadows, his place as Mok-ha’s confidant now occupied by his brother. He pulls back and busies himself with his investigation of the attempted murder by bees. Woo-hak’s suspicions are confirmed when restored dashcam footage shows Bong-wan breaking into Dae-woong’s car. Woo-hak rushes the evidence to the police, hoping this will get Bong-wan arrested.

But of course, it’s not that easy, even though Bong-wan continues to be a total menace. His next plan is to have his cop friend run prints from a can with Bo-geol’s fingerprints. That way, he can prove Ki-ho has committed identity theft. Thankfully, his friend isn’t as corrupt as he is and refuses to share any information with Bong-wan.

Cue Bong-wan showing up at the house one night with only Mok-ha and Ha-jung at home. Making good on her promise, Mok-ha ensures Bo-geol doesn’t see his father by sending a text asking him to run her an errand. Mok-ha bravely takes point in protecting the family and refuses to cow in the face of Bong-wan’s rage. Despite his threats, she calls the cops to report that her stalker is with her now.

Woo-hak and Sang-doo arrive home and take in the scene. Sang-doo tells Bong-wan that his threats to expose them won’t work – he’s already turned himself in. So of course, Bong-wan grows incensed and resorts to violence like always. But his son is now stronger than him and no longer a terrified child. Woo-hak protects Mok-ha when Bong-wan pushes her. And then Woo-hak pins him and readies to attack, barely in control of himself as his pent-up trauma surfaces. Mok-ha pulls him off before he can do something he’ll regret. By the time Bo-geol gets home, it’s all over and Bong-wan has been taken into custody. Woo-hak’s arm is in a sling, but that’s the worst of their injuries. Well, physically at least.

It looks like Sang-doo confessed right in time because the remains of the original possessors of their identities are found – their car crashed into the river, killing the whole family. The news spreads like wildfire, upending everyone’s lives. Crowds gather outside their home, and the brothers both turn in their resignations at work.

Mok-ha is in danger of getting sucked into the scandal since she knew about the identity theft, and with her fledgling fame, that could be detrimental to her career. Ran-joo hands her an ultimatum: she’ll produce Mok-ha’s album, but only if Mok-ha cuts ties with Bo-geol and his family. She has a day to decide.

It’s not an easy choice, but Mok-ha has already given up once. So she chooses her dream and packs her stuff that night. Bo-geol, who was listening in to Mok-ha and Ran-joo’s discussion, shows up to take her to her new home. He bought and furnished a place for her as soon as she’d returned from the island; Woo-hak derailed his plans by stashing her in their attic, ha. Bo-geol encourages her to cut ties with all of them and pursue her dream. But if things don’t work out, she can always come back – her room will be waiting.

Over breakfast the next morning, Bo-geol casually announces to the family that Mok-ha is gone for good. Everyone is upset, but no one more so than Woo-hak. Sang-doo finds him crying in Mok-ha’s empty room. Why did they let him think he was Ki-ho? he asks his father. If only he’d known that Bo-geol was Ki-ho, he never would’ve let himself fall for Mok-ha. Sang-doo holds him while he sobs his broken heart out.

Her decision made, Mok-ha gets right to work recording her album with Ran-joo, their comfortable relationship resumed. But their peace is short-lived. An article comes out about Ran-joo using Mok-ha as a scheme to take company shares, so it’s all hands on deck to deal with the newest scandal.

Meanwhile, Dae-woong wakes up from his coma, which means they might get another victim statement against Bong-wan. On top of that, the family decides to submit a cross-examination between them and Bong-wan. They’re done hiding.

We’ve got a lot to cover in the finale week what with making Mok-ha a star, defeating Bong-wan, dealing with yet another public scandal, and bringing our makeshift family back together. I have no doubt that Mok-ha’s separation from Bo-geol and the fam is temporary. If we know anything by this point, it’s that Mok-ha and Bo-geol have an unbreakable bond that isn’t even affected by a 15-year disappearance. And then there’s the rest of the family who are just as loyal and loving. Mok-ha isn’t one to be deterred, so I’m sure she’ll find a way to follow her heart and her dreams.
