[Drama Chat] Comfort characters
by Dramaddictally
The idea of the “comfort character” — a fictional character that you deeply relate to, usually in a way that makes you feel happy or safe — gained popularity in 2020 when many of us were boxed up alone with our anxieties for months on end during the pandemic. I didn’t know the term before that, but the minute I heard it, it made total sense. I’d felt that special affinity a time or two in my life and I was glad to put a name to it.
We talk a lot about favorite dramas — those that comfort, or heal, or feel like a kind of sob-it-out therapy — the ones we come back to again and again to make us feel good. But setting aside the drama itself, there are characters I’ve identified with beyond the frame of the story. Maybe their life circumstances are similar to mine. Or maybe their personality traits just hit home. Whatever it is, I feel a bond, like if I met them walking down the street one day, we’d be instant friends.
I’ve written many times about how much I love the drama Just Between Lovers, and story-wise, that still stands. But the true reason I watch it over and over (and over!) is because the male lead, Lee Gang-doo, is my comfort character. It’s not about having a crush, or looking beyond the character to see Junho staring back at me, it’s that I really identify with his attitude, emotions, and ways of dealing with the world. When things seem dark, or dreary, or too tough to bear, I like to go back and rewatch episodes of how he survives — and think about all the times I too have come out a survivor.
The great thing about a comfort character is that they’re always there when you need them, just waiting to hang out, even if the world is falling apart around us. Whether we see them as a soul twin, a hero, or just someone to provide guidance, the fact that we can call on them at any hour, might be the most comforting part of all.
Do you have a comfort character?
