Castaway Diva: Episodes 5-6

Lots of secrets come to light this week that threaten personal and professional lives alike. Our amnesiac reporter is struggling to make sense of the bits and pieces he’s regaining of his memories, while our voiceless singer and intrepid protégé continue their precarious ruse. All the while, our PD brother watches from the sidelines and works to find the courage to get involved.

Castaway Diva: Episodes 5-6

We’re all-in on the Ki-ho mystery this week. With Woo-hak’s memories slowly returning, he starts doing his own research to elucidate his past. His first clue was that brief memory of Bong-wan’s face during his flashback. He rushes to find Mok-ha before Bong-wan does, but Bo-geol gets there first. Bo-geol isn’t gentle with Mok-ha, yelling at her for being naïve and obsessed with Ki-ho. He does soften slightly in the face of her sincere tears and worry for Ki-ho. Bo-geol cryptically assures her Ki-ho is fine, although he won’t divulge how he knows.

They’re gone by the time Woo-hak arrives, but Bong-wan isn’t, so Woo-hak follows him home. Woo-hak wants to turn Bong-wan in to the police, which Bo-geol vehemently vetoes. Instead, Woo-hak continues secretly following Bong-wan throughout the week. It’s clear Bong-wan has not learned from his mistakes and is as terrifying as ever. When Ki-ho’s old friend Dae-woong tries to dissuade him from looking for Ki-ho, Bong-wan orchestrates a car crash that leaves Dae-woong in a coma. How, you may ask? By planting a box of vicious hornets in his car. Yeah, he’s that kind of villain.

Woo-hak’s intentions become clearer when he promises Mok-ha that Ki-ho is alive and well, and that she’ll be able to meet him soon. He just wants to be sure it’s safe first. Clearly, he doesn’t mean safe for himself because he breaks into Bong-wan’s apartment one night when he’s away. More snippets of memory return as he roams the apartment. Then, he sees a family photo on the wall – in it are Bong-wan, Ki-ho, his current mom SONG HA-JUNG (Seo Jung-yeon), and Bo-geol. Oho, so the brothers are biologically related!

Amid this shocking discovery, Bo-geol walks into the apartment and has no choice but to fess up. We see a flashback of the brothers, at the time named Ki-ho and Chae-ho, hiding from their incensed father. He found another stash of Ki-ho’s cash. Rather than cower, Ki-ho stands up to his father who then hits him over the head. He was knocked unconscious and woke up in the hospital as Woo-hak. Not only did his amnesia free Ki-ho of his awful memories, but it freed his whole family to forget and live new lives.

So now, unless they pull a fast one on us, it’s clear that Woo-hak is indeed Ki-ho. The one thing that’s not entirely clear is the timeline. Based on what we know, Ki-ho and his father lived alone on Chunsam Island when Mok-ha knew him. They referred to him as a transfer student at school, so I’m guessing his father just got stationed there. His mom had already run away, presumably taking his little brother Chae-ho with her. After Mok-ha’s disappearance, Ki-ho got his father fired and disappeared. He must’ve met back up with his mom and brother, and Bong-wan must’ve found them again. So then when did their incredibly sweet father KANG SANG-DOO (Lee Joong-ok) show up? If he was there when Ki-ho/Woo-hak woke up in the hospital, he must’ve already been in the picture. Guess we’ll get more details later.

Knowing the truth, Woo-hak wants to take back their identities and stop running from their father – they’re adults who can handle themselves now. Bo-geol is firmly against that plan. They didn’t exactly get new identities in the legal way, it would seem, and exposing everything could rip their family apart. Woo-hak is devastated, but he would never hurt his precious family that went to such lengths to protect him.

As much as it kills him, Woo-hak lies to Mok-ha that he found Ki-ho. He’s happily married and says he’ll be rooting for her from afar. To drive it home, he hands her the old USB with her audition video that Ki-ho had. Mok-ha receives the news calmly, smiling to know he’s okay but sad she won’t get to see him like Woo-hak initially promised.

Still, Mok-ha is no fool and is starting to get suspicious. There are too many coincidences to ignore, especially when Ha-jung repeats her famous saying about dreams coming true in unexpected ways, which shocks Mok-ha – it’s the exact phrase Ki-ho told her all those years ago from his mom. Of course, Ha-jung pretends not to know who Ki-ho is and laughs it off, but she’s concerned enough to go to Bo-geol. He then tells her about Bong-wan finding Mok-ha. Thankfully, the family’s instinct is to protect Mok-ha like they protect each other rather than throwing her to the curb to save themselves. They really have claimed her like she’s one of them: giving her a place to live, a job at their salon, and even insisting they’re all added to her emergency contacts list.

Putting all the coincidences together, Mok-ha confides in Ran-joo that she thinks one of the brothers must be Ki-ho. She’s leaning toward Woo-hak since Bo-geol’s gaze is too weak and wishy washy (which she amusingly tells him to his face). But with everything going on, both brothers are acting out of character. Woo-hak is being extra nice and agreeable with everyone, but his eyes are sad. One night he cries on Mok-ha’s shoulder, feeling lost yet touched by her unwavering support and love for Ki-ho.

Bo-geol just confuses Mok-ha with his hot-and-cold behavior. He walls himself off and acts disinterested, but he also frequently helps Mok-ha. He even takes her to a wedding to help Ran-joo. PRESIDENT HWANG, who runs Ran-joo’s old agency, is their only chance of selling Ran-joo’s albums. Since Seo-joon pulled the albums he has the rights to, they need to get President Hwang to re-release Ran-joo’s oldest albums.

When Ran-joo met with him, he’d told her he’d consider re-releasing the albums if she attended and sang at his daughter’s wedding. She’s reluctant, but ever-supportive Mok-ha convinces her to show up and sing a duet with her which is pretty much the highlight of Mok-ha’s life.

Not only does President Hwang re-release her albums and turn down Seo-joon’s attempts to buy him off, but he leaves Ran-joo with some food for thought. She’s been taking out her anger on Mok-ha lately, assuming she’ll never leave. But everyone has their limits, just like Ran-joo eventually left President Hwang’s agency after he kept taking out his anger on her.

Amidst all this drama, a new challenger has entered the building. EUN MO-RAE (Bae Gang-hee), the girl who replaced Mok-ha back in the day, will be competing against Ran-joo on the variety show. She’s got beef with Ran-joo since she felt like she was always being unfavorably compared to Mok-ha as a poor substitute. Ran-joo, for her part, resented the up-and-comer for taking her crown.

Even though Mo-rae is a global top star, she’s insecure when it comes to Ran-joo (and now Mok-ha). She refuses to sing live on the program, and despite it going against the whole point of the show, the producers agree – she’s a top star, after all. Mok-ha, however, is not happy about it. She challenges the self-doubting Mo-rae to prove herself by singing live. Then, she’ll give her credit and acknowledge that she deserves her crown.

While this is going down, Woo-hak continues his quest for knowledge. He gently tells Sang-doo that he remembers everything and knows who he really is. Sang-doo looks terrified and insists that Woo-hak is his child and no one else’s, which Woo-hak has no desire to deny. He just wants to know how they faked their new identities.

Back at the recording studio, Bo-geol overhears Mok-ha’s challenge to Mo-rae and makes an executive decision. No one will be lip syncing today – not Mo-rae or Ran-joo. Mok-ha and Ran-joo are stunned he knows, but he’s not trying to punish them. Instead, he wants Mok-ha to be the one who goes onstage if Ran-joo’s performance wins.

Well, that should make things interesting next week. While I do believe Ran-joo’s intentions are good toward Mok-ha, she’s getting too used to using her. If they don’t stop the charade soon, it will never end. What’s interesting is that, according to Ran-joo’s doctor, there’s nothing physically wrong with her voice; it’s a mental block. Rather than using Mok-ha as a crutch, she needs to start figuring out how to gain the confidence to use her own voice again.

I hope we don’t drag out the reveal of Ki-ho’s identity to Mok-ha for too long. I want them to have time to deal with everything and not have too many lies piled up between them. While I don’t agree with lying to Mok-ha, I do get Woo-hak’s dilemma and am glad he at least ensured she knows Ki-ho is alright. And given how scary Bong-wan is, I certainly get why the whole family changed their identities through whatever means necessary. Bong-wan is a menace who has been obsessed with finding his son for years not out of love but vengeance. I doubt he’ll ever stop, which I think Woo-hak knows. Like it or not, the family is going to have to face him again. But this time, the kids are grown and not so easy to silence.
