Horrors await Park Seo-joon in Gyeongseong Creature
by solstices
An intense, intriguing teaser is out for the much-anticipated Netflix series Gyeongseong Creature, featuring our shrewd hero Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class) and our hardened heroine Han So-hee (Soundtrack #1). Set against the backdrop of 1945 Gyeongseong — back when the citizens lived under Japanese colonial rule — the drama is poised to explore identity, humanity, and the horrors of the monsters that lurk in the unknown.
Our leads’ first meeting is one that’s fraught with tension. Whirling around, they cock their guns at each other, neither willing to back down. As an observant opportunist who accumulated his wealth by dealing in information, Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon) is immediately wary of Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee). She’s known for her skills in tracking down missing people, and she’s arrived in Gyeongseong to search for her mother who disappeared ten years ago.
That setup would be plenty interesting in and of itself, but our drama has more in store. Strange occurrences have been witnessed at the derelict Ongseong hospital, and Tae-sang decides it’s time to investigate. Together with Chae-ok, Tae-sang gathers a group to venture into the building’s murky depths — but what lies in wait may be more harrowing than any of them expect. With relentless shootouts, frenzied escapes, and chilling bloodstains, this adventure isn’t for the faint of heart.
We don’t get more than a few glimpses of the supporting cast, but we do get to see Wie Ha-joon (The Worst of Evil) as Tae-sang’s best buddy Kwon Joon-taek, playing a soulful melody on the piano and wielding a sword in the dark of night. Though he was born into a chinilpa — or pro-Japanese — family, his revulsion towards their atrocities pushes him to ally with Tae-sang.
Notably, the drama is set in the spring of 1945 — Korea was liberated in autumn that same year, when Japan surrendered at the end of World War II — so it raises the question of whether the mysterious creatures are tied to the shift in power. “Until the cherry blossoms fall,” the voiceover narrates in Japanese, perhaps foreshadowing the end of Japan’s reign. Yet the ending line, also in Japanese, is equal parts hopeful and ominous. It’s the birth of a goddess — but who, or what, is she?
Helmed by PD Jung Dong-yoon (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) with scripts penned by Kang Eun-kyung (the Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim series), Part 1 of Gyeongseong Creature will be coming to our screens on December 22, with Part 2 dropping on January 5.
