Nam Joo-hyuk is judge, jury, and executioner in Vigilante

Disney+ has released a new trailer for its upcoming crime-action drama Vigilante, starring Nam Joo-hyuk (Twenty Five Twenty One) as the titular protagonist on a quest for justice. Based on a webtoon by the same name, the series follows Nam Joo-hyuk’s character Kim Ji-yong, a police cadet who lives as a model student by day and as a brutal vigilante by night.

The trailer opens with a quick glimpse of its four main leads as Kim Ji-yong narrates, “From now on, blame the law for letting you go free. I’ll show you what hell is.” As Ji-yong dons his hood, Yoo Ji-tae (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) gives the Korean term for vigilante, which is then followed by Kim So-jin (Through the Darkness) explaining that the law failed so someone is exacting punishment with violence.

While Ji-yong approaches two thugs harassing a family for money, he wonders if the sentencing was fair and if the person is repenting. He easily apprehends the thugs, leaving them face down in front of a wall with the words “trash,” and he continues his hunt, promising to show those who have been freed a taste of hell.

Detective Jo Heon (Yoo Ji-tae) observes a crime scene and deduces their culprit is someone with exceptional intellect, a meticulous plan, and resolute commitment to the crime. He postulates that he could be someone who knows them well, and the trailer cuts to Ji-yong being sworn into the force.

The text on screen says that the law has holes, and someone asks, “Fundamentally, shouldn’t our profession believe in reformation?” Ji-yong, though, seems to take a different approach as he tells his latest target to write an apology if they want to live.

The trailer then introduces Lee Jun-hyuk (Dark Hole) as DK Group’s Vice-President Jo Kang-ok, and he shakes hands with journalist Choi Mi-ryeo (Kim So-jin) who shares his interest in the vigilante. She wants to use this opportunity to offer their audience the best show on earth, but standing in her way is Jo Heon who vows to make the vigilante disappear from people’s memories.

Described as the dark hero society has created, Ji-yong says that they should have spent their life repenting, so now, he will be the judge. As Jo Heon confronts Ji-yong, Kang-ok makes a deal with Mi-ryeo to protect him. A quick series of action sequences flash on screen, and the trailer ends with Ji-yong looking bloody and tired as he says, “Justice? This is justice.”

Directed by filmmaker Choi Jung-yeol (Start-Up, the 2019 film) and written by Lee Min-seob, Vigilante will premiere on Wednesday, November 8 on Disney+.
