Perpétua begs Manuela not to kill herself, and Manuela then cuts off part of her hair. Bentinho and Caetano take Paulo’s body to the ranch. Bento Gonçalves is shocked to learn that Paulo died and tells Joaquim that they’ll have to go to the ranch. Ana Joaquina despairs when she sees Paulo’s body.
Manuela assures Perpétua that her life ended. Rossetti tells Garibaldi that the people of Laguna are unhappy with Canabarro. Anita and Garibaldi return to Laguna and many people disapprove of the fact that they’re together. Tio Antônio repudiates Anita. Pedro worries about Manuela.
Onofre demands that Zé Pedra tell him the location of Joana’s convent. Bentinho sees blood in the shed and wonders if Estevão is prowling around the ranch. Mariana and Corte Real follow Rosário.
Bento Manuel goes to Paulo’s wake and meets Bento Gonçalves. Joaquim gives Manuela a notebook for her to start writing her diary again.
