Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (March 4, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Bros on Foot: I don’t want it to be over! I am enjoying these four guys way too much. It’s even made me Min-ho-tolerant! (I really liked how kind he was towards Ji-hoon when he decided not to bungee jump). Anyway, it’s just the hanging out and the wise cracks that get me every time with this show. Although that makeover scene — not only was it worth the LOL, but… how… how does Joo Ji-hoon look so good? T_T And what does he use for his skincare regime? I must know.

Call It Love: I really love this drama! Even if I wasn’t enjoying the story (which I totally am) I would enjoy watching this just for the direction. I am enjoying how it’s shot, how sparsely the story is told, and yes, even how it plays with color palette. It makes the story feel a bit remote and far-off to me, in a storybook sort of way, and I love that. Also worth noting, I expected it to be way more melo than it is — i.e., there is no throb of super dramatic string quartets; the drama expresses its emotions in a more bound-up sort of way, and I’m finding it fascinating.

Crash Course in Romance: Well, this drama certainly dumped a lot on us in its penultimate week. I don’t mind that this rom-com has taken a bit of a melodramatic turn, especially as far as our students go because that’s something that’s been building up over the course of the story. Although I’ve not been a fan of Su-ah from the beginning, I appreciate what they’ve done with her character. She’s not pleasant, but she’s not so unlikeable that we can’t understand and sympathize with the circumstances that caused her to be jealous and petty. Dong-hee, however, is just — sighs. Even if I buy into this idea that he admires Chi-yeol so much that he’d kill in order to protect Chi-yeol’s reputation, I don’t think the character would go so far to harm the people that are making Chi-yeol happier. Does not compute. As for having Haeng-sun’s sister show up in the near final hour? That’s a big ol’ uggghhhhhh from me.

The Heavenly Idol: It’s silly, and I love it. The campiness kind of reminds me of Sailor Moon or some other 90s magical girl anime, and I’m just waiting for a cheesy transformation cut-scene where Rembrary becomes Sailor Blueberry — the champion of love and K-pop. And in the name of Lord Redrin, he will punish the Devil!

Taxi Driver 2: What can I say? I love watching Kim Do-ki donning various disguises and kicking butt. Plus, the OST is sooooooo good. I kind of wish the drama didn’t introduce the prospect of a big antagonist, though, because I felt like the first season was its strongest before Baek Sung-mi became the team’s main opponent in the last story arc. Then again, maybe the sniper is someone with a similar — but more deadly — vigilante agenda, which could make things interesting?

Seojin’s Korean Street Food: I loved Youn’s Kitchen 2, when the team was in Spain, and so I have been counting down the days for this new edition in Mexico. I’ve only seen Episode 1 so far, but it is just as good as I anticipated. I love how these variety shows (especially when they’re working in a kitchen) make the celebrities seem like just regular people, interacting with any person off the street. They’re all so humble and likable. And hearing Park Seo-joon and Choi Woo-shik speaking in both English and Spanish has me in stupid smiles. I can’t wait for Woo-shiki to join the team this week!
