Garibaldi arrives in Brazil and meets Joaquim, Bento Gon\u00e7alves\u2019s son. Ros\u00e1rio assures Estev\u00e3o that nothing will separate them. Pedro convinces Netto to proclaim the independence of Rio Grande do Sul. Bento Gon\u00e7alves thinks it was a precipitated decision. Bento Gon\u00e7alves\u2019s troops are surrounded by Bento Manuel\u2019s and surrender. Z\u00e9 Pedra finds Estev\u00e3o in the shed.<\/p>\n
Netto tells Caetana that Bento Gon\u00e7alves is jailed in Porto Alegre, and she decides to go there to find him. Estev\u00e3o is kept prisoner by Netto, who agrees to let him stay on the ranch until he can walk. Bento Gon\u00e7alves is taken to Rio de Janeiro before Caetana can see him. Ros\u00e1rio asks Manuela to help her free Estev\u00e3o.<\/p>\n
Bento Gon\u00e7alves meets Garibaldi. Manuela and Ros\u00e1rio put Estev\u00e3o on a horse, and he departs. Onofre and Corte Real manage to escape from jail, but Bento Gon\u00e7alves stays.
