Estevão introduces himself to Bento Manuel. Bento Gonçalves receives a visit from Francisco Sabino da Rocha, who says he’s going to help him escape.
Manuela is fascinated by Garibaldi. Maria worries about her daughter’s enthusiasm. Garibaldi plans to construct a shipping vessel in Antônia’s shed. The men arrive at the ranch. Caetano and Bentinho assure Caetana that their father’s escape is being planned. Bento Gonçalves tells the commander of the fort that he needs to take sea baths every day.
Maria tells Rosário to forget Estevão. Rosário explains to Corte Real that she loves another man, but he says he won’t give up. Anselmo tells Maria that she should have followed her heart when it was time for her to get married.
The men leave for war. Caetana doesn’t let Caetano go. Bento Gonçalves manages to swim in the direction of a boat and escapes. Chico Mascate gives Rosário a letter from Estevão. Manuela and Garibaldi kiss.
