Manuela and Garibaldi spend the night together, and he assures her that he’ll marry her before he leaves. Maria reveals to Anselmo that Rosário is in love with Estevão. Anselmo arranges the engagement of Rosário to Corte Real, much to her despair. Joaquim asks Anselmo to give him Manuela’s hand in marriage.
Rosário tells Manuela and Luzia that she’s going to run away with Estevão. Bento Gonçalves invites Luigi Rosseti to go to the ranch with him to see Garibaldi’s ships. The Imperial guard attacks the group. Anselmo is gravely injured and makes Bento promise that he’ll get Manuela to marry Joaquim. Manuela tries to dissuade Rosário from leaving but can’t.
Anselmo tells Maria to look for the man she loved, and then dies. Corte Real goes to avenge Anselmo’s death along with the other young men from the ranch. Manuela tells Rosário that their father is dead.
The men attack Estevão’s troops. Corte Real shoots Estevão.
