Rosário tells Corte Real that Estevão isn’t dead. Bento Manuel offers Bento Gonçalves a prostitute, which he turns down. Joaquim apologizes to Manuela, who begs him to intercede on her behalf by Bento Gonçalves’s side. Maria overhears everything and decides to take Manuela to a convent, but Antônia says it’s Bento Gonçalves who’ll decide her destiny.
Corte Real asks Rosário to remember that he continues waiting for her. Ana Joaquina assures Rosário that not all arranged marriages are unhappy. Garibaldi tries to talk to Bento Gonçalves about Manuela, but he asks him to wait until the matters relating to the war are resolved.
Garibaldi starts to execute his plan to take the boats to Laguna. All the men go to the ranch to celebrate Perpétua’s birthday. Tereza asks Perpétua to dance with Inácio, which causes them to become very perturbed.
Bento Gonçalves tells Garibaldi that he doesn’t think he and Manuela can be happy. Garibaldi leaves a letter with Manuela and lets her know that he’ll have to leave.
