Perpétua tells Inácio that they’ll have to stay apart. Bento Manuel says he’s going to break away from the cause because he doesn’t agree with the abolition of slavery. Rosa assures Onofre that she had a miscarriage, but he doesn’t believe her and says he loves her.
Manuela has the premonition that Garibaldi is still alive. Perpétua reveals to Manuela that she kissed Inácio and asks for penitence in church. Rosário hears the sound of Estevão’s flute and believes that he’s calling for her. Garibaldi tells Rossetti that he thinks about Manuela every day. Rosa visits Joana, her daughter, in a convent. Anita cries over being married to a drunk.
Canabarro and Garibaldi decide to attack. Joana believes that Rosa is her godmother and assures her that she doesn’t want to become a nun. The Imperials are thrown out of Laguna, which makes Anita very happy. Manuela feels like a coward for not having followed Garibaldi.
Bento Manuel asks to talk to Caetana. Anita hears an explosion, gets frightened, and almost shoots Garibaldi.
